You can still claim a Facebook domain name

I've had two clients call me this morning confused about Facebook recently allowing individuals and companies to claim custom domain names. Now instead of a long string such as www.facebook.com./234fsd0 you can actually get www.facebook.com/chris.slocumb. Unfortunately you do not have to be the owner of a personal name, trademarked name, or domain in order to claim the custom URL.

Even though the name land grab began this past Sunday, you can still claim a custom URL by logging into your Facebook account and directing your browser to http://www.facebook.com/username/.

It is true that you can still get a Facebook domain name on Facebook. However, if you are hoping to start a business profile account for your company you are no longer able to do so on Facebook. Instead you can create a fan page for your business which is accessible to all viewers on Facebook. A fan page allows almost all of the same functions as a profile page except that you are unable to receive a domain name at this time. Hopefully Facebook will realize this glitch in the their system soon so that businesses will be able to get domain names for their Facebook fan pages.

This is an article on getting your facebook username back from someone who has taken it. It also points out that Facebook fan pages CAN have usernames, but only if they have more than 1,000 fans.

It's worth pointing out that you can now change your facebook username. From their help section:

"You can change your username from the Settings tab of the Account Settings page. Scroll down to "Username" and click "change." Then follow the on-screen directions. Keep in mind you will only be able to change your username once."

I think you can only change once, so choose wisely!

Help! Yours was the best advice I could find on the internet, but once I went to www.facebook.com/username, it gave me the option to select my company's fb page BUT told me we are not eleigible for a new username at this time but will be in the future... It gave no reason why, how to fix it, or when this may be available. Any ideas??

You must have more than 25 fans on the page now. See http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=900#!/help/?faq=15073
